Casey Grammar students have embraced a fantastic local organisation, Backpacks 4 Vic Kids, which provides children in care with a backpack filled with essentials items.
On school holidays, Casey students from years 7-12 volunteer to pack the backpacks, which are distributed to children in Victoria and Tasmania who are going into foster care and kinship care.
Often, the children are placed into care quickly, and have nothing but the clothes they are wearing.
The backpacks contain essential items such as toiletries, clothing, sleepwear, a torch, a blanket and a toy or activity, which belongs to the child.
Year 12 student Kathleen has volunteered many times. ‘This organisation does all they can do to help these children, to make things a little bit easier, so it’s a joy every time we get to take part and help out this wonderful charity,’ she says.
Her Year 12 classmate Prathyusha says she’s been inspired seeing the efforts ‘volunteers put into making life better for disadvantaged children in our community’.
Year 10’s Lilly has volunteered three times, and particularly enjoys working with the group because it is clearly helping to benefit children.
Lilly says that in a world where so many have so much, it’s amazing to know that the backpacks have the potential to change the course of a child’s life.
Anyone interested in volunteering, or donating items for the backpacks, can contact Sally Draayers or Marne O’Beirne from Backpacks 4 Vic Kids on (03) 5926 0313, or pop into 86 Camms Road, Cranbourne.
